? I have enjoyed Rubys Wish by first-time author Shirin Yin Bridges, a tribute to her grandmother who as a young girl broke with tradition to assert her true self.
? Of course, Ed Young has an extensive list of books he has illustrated or authored and illustrated.? Though most are folk tales or set in ancient times, I find Young's story as compelling as his work.
? Though she is not Asian, Emily Arnold McCully's contribution of Beautiful Warrior fits with her frequent theme of strong female characters.? I find it?thoroughly affirming for girls, in particular.
? Also...though not Asian...Rosemary Wells' Yoko books allow children to glimpse and contemplate Asian-American children as their contemporaries.
? I love Angel Child, Dragon Child, as it helps children understand the difficulties of being an immigrant.? Michele Maria Surat is the author and illustrations are by Vo Dinh Mai.? I also love this one, because it is through story...through words...that the problem is eventually solved.
? Finally, for the YA crowd, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned American Born Chinese.? Gene Luen Yang uses humor and at times, absurdity, to explore stereotypes and challenges faced by young Americans with Chinese ancestry.
? As I realize I could keep going, I too, recognize what a wealth of Asian and Asian-American literature there is today.
? Happy Reading Angie Miles Ashland, Virginia
