One feature of the 8th Regional Conference in St. Charles, IL, October 2-4, will be a small group book discussion of books of international interest. Several of the books were selected because of the vivid descriptions of the contemporary experiences of children around the world. Others were selected for the way they reflected the conference theme, ?Where Worlds Meet,? or because they represented works of authors and illustrators who will speak at the conference. There is still time to register for the conference on the usbby.org website. If you can not join us, we hope you will read the books and share them with the young people in your lives.
? City Boy by Jan Michael (Clarion and Amazon.com)
? Flotsam by David Wiesner (widely held at most libraries)
? From Another World by Ana Maria Machado (can be ordered from Groundwood Books and Amazon.com)
? The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan (can be ordered from Simply Read Books, Toronto, or Amazon.com)
? The Shepherd's Granddaughter by Anne Laurel Carter (Can be ordered from Groundwood Books and Amazon.com)
? Wanting Mor by Rukhsana Khan (can be ordered from Groundwood Books and Amazon.com) Book discussion leaders will be responsible for choosing and sharing a poem by Naomi Shihab Nye with the groups and an illustration from Under the Spell of the Moon by Patsy Aldana with foreword by Katherine Paterson.
Book discussion participants who wish to read further are encouraged to explore the International Children's Digital Library, http://en.childrenslibrary.org/. There, readers will find the IBBY White Ravens List as well as children's books in their original language arranged by author, title, country, and theme.
