As a school librarian, I am aware of tons of children's books that have migrated to the stage -- Our students are often taken to the local university to see them -- Amelia Bedelia, Junie B. Jones, Frog and Toad, Follow the Drinking Gourd, and this fall, Frindle. Some of them are well done, some are a little cheesy. They do get the teachers to read newer titles and focus on an author or series for a while.

I have tickets to see the stage production of Little House on the Prairie this winter, starring Melissa Gilbert as Ma -- the t.v. Laura all grown up has taken a new role. Should be interesting to see how it is portrayed. They are definitely promoting it based on the t.v. series and her name rather than the books -- even in Madison, WI.

Annually, I do a display of books to media -- putting out everything from Peter Pan to Harry Potter, to help the kids understand where many of their movies and t.v. shows originate. Those books fly out the door. They also get studied a lot by browsers. I have often encouraged my advanced readers to tackle the "real" Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, and Winnie-the-Pooh as challenge reading!! They are frequently amazed at the difference.

The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith caught the attention of my third grader teachers only AFTER the movie and now they have reading groups studying it. Also, the book, Nim's Island, became more popular after the movie with all the kids saying the book was so much better!! Hurray for reading!
