While the trend of books to movies seems never ending, there is a relatively new trend of books to musicals or even books to movies to musicals! Even though I live in New York City, I don't get to as much theater as I would like. There have been a couple of these theatrical book adaptations that have stayed with me:
I so enjoyed the The Secret Garden, which won a 1991 Tony Award, that I saw it twice! My brother, who usually prefers much edgier materials, bawled all through the ending. The show didn't have as a long a Broadway life as it should have. I still have have the CD from this production and the lyrics (by Marsha Norman) and music (by Lucy Simon) are quite magical. I am still hoping for a revival.
I recently saw an off-Broadway production of Coraline with music by Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields fame. While I had a few problems with the show, it was a really a fascinating production featuring toy piano, brilliant staging and interesting casting (Coraline was played by an actor in her fifties).
I haven't seen many of the book to movie to musical adaptations that are on Broadway currently, such as Shrek or The Little Mermaid, and I am not sure I want to. I did enjoy the movie version of Shrek, a totally different animal than the picture book, and I am not sure if they can make an ogre and a donkey come alive on stage as they did in the film or the book. Maybe I will be proved wrong! I am curious about the musical version of Mary Poppins, which I hear is a little closer to the book than the film.
And now we have comic books to musicals! In the works is a musical version of Spider-Man directed by Julie Taymor. A singing Peter Parker and James Jameson? Hmmm...
