Some of my favorite adaptations came from "Wonderworks" -- the now defunct branch of PBS . One of the best was
"Danny Champion of the World".
I thought they did a brilliant job of conveying the book. Wonderworks was also the production company that distributed the first "Anne of Green Gables" by Kevin Sullivan to US audiences, before Disney aquired the distribution rights to the rest of his works ("Road to Avonlea").
One I liked at the time, but liked even less after reading the book was
"Girl of the Limberlost".
I thought they took a lot of the heart out of the story, with the subtraction of the supporting characters who, in the book, champion Elnora in her battle for education against a domineering, bi-polar mother.
With many books, I think if they go for a tv mini-series rather than a feature length movie, they might better serve the source material (of course, this doesn't always work -- "Earthsea" being a prime example).

I completely agree with you about Babe, the movie;
perhaps one of the few movies to take the book to the next level
while remaining true to the author's intent.
