[CCBC-Net] Lovely Bones and book movies

Movies and books, the constant battle -- It seems no movie can ever equal the experience of a reader with a book that truly moves one. Still, many movies are excellent on their own. I have many books that I have loved and felt disappointment in the movie -- early in my life I learned my lesson with the Disney versions of fairy tales -- and then, a little later, Gone With the Wind. Since, I have learned to appreciate a movie for what it is and not expect a director (the creator of the experience) to "see" a story in the same way I "see" it as a reader. There have been some movies that have actually given me more insight into a book that didn't quite register or connect. That said, I would guess that The Lovely Bones movie may be promoted as a "ghost" story to fall in line with several of the popular t.v. and movie "psychic" shows like Medium. The fear and terror will probably be played up as well and that makes the director choice understandable. Yet, I want to see this movie. I had the same reading experience as Jane. Loved it right up to the end and then oh, no! Maybe the movie will push me another direction or back to the book. Jane -- did you write your own alternative ending?? That would have been great! Perhaps I am a bit out of it - I had not heard that there was to be a movie of The Lovely Bones. Just checked it out on imdb.com. The cast is amazing - Saiorse Ronan (13-year-old Briony from Atonement), Stanley Tucci, Mark Wahlberg, Rachael Weisz, Susan Sarandon. Peter Jackson, of the Lord of the Rings movies, directs - an odd choice, to my mind.

How will Hollywood treat this? The trailer makes it look rather like a thriller, which is not how I remember the book; but the trailer may not be representative of the movie. If the movie is at all true to the book, it will be heavily narrated, which is sometimes awkward. And - no spoiler here, it's in the first sentence of the novel - it will be narrated by a dead person, which can be more awkward still. Will the movie be graceful or klunky?

I guess the most telling part, to me, will be whether the movie can capture the astonishing unusualness of Sebold's book, or whether it will reduce it to just a series of familiar-feeling backdrops, plot elements and special effects without the - forgive me - spirit of Susie Salmon and the book in which she resides.

I liked a lot of THE LOVELY BONES, actually right up to the very end. But the ending was so obviously wrong. . .I hated it and it spoiled the entire book for me.

I think Ann's concerns re: The Lovely Bones sums up in a nutshell the almost impossible task of rendering some books to movies. Film makers are very clever and talented, but a movie is not a book. It may be capable of retelling the story, but because it is a different medium, it is not geared to capture all those other elements that made the book so good -- the pacing, the language, the rhythm, the description, the tone, the mood, the phrasing. A book is so much more than merely a story. It isn't just what is said, but HOW it is said.

Sophie's Choice is a perfect example. So many times while I was reading it, I wanted to throw it at the wall. I did not want Sophie to labor through her painful story even one more time, although I knew she would reveal another small detail. It wasn't until I got to the end of the book and discovered what her choice had been, that I realized there could be no other way for her to reveal herself. I agonized with her and silently apologized to her for wanting her to get to the point and spit out what she had to say. How clever William Styron was tell her story in the way that he did. That book haunted me for a good week. Even today, I feel a sense of anguish when I think about it.

So I've never seen the movie. I didn't want to, because I knew there was no way a film could create that same emotional conundrum.

I'm so happy to hear that someone agrees with me -- I've always felt exactly this way about the book!

Oh, trust me, it could. I would put it at the #1 traumatic movie experience of my life.

I don't know how faithful it was to the book, but I can't imagine anything more horrific (meant literally) than that movie, and that choice.
