Using books ranging from the Twilight Series to Ian McEwan's "Atonement" as examples, our 18-year-old granddaughter observed that she always knows what the main character of the book is thinking. She misses that in film adaptations of the novels she's read, and I do, too.
But as a film buff, I realize that this is a distinctive medium offering much that a written text cannot provide. Perhaps those of us who are readers as well as movie-goers would enjoy film adaptations more if we didn't arrive with an expectation for anything other than a certain familiarity with the story.
