The 2009 Rabbit Hill Festival of Literature in Westport, Connecticut takes place Oct. 22-24, 2009. The festival theme this year is
"Creative Approaches to Biography and Historical Fiction." Presenters will be: Susan Campbell Bartoletti, Tonya Bolden, Candace Fleming, Dennis and Judith Fradin, and Gary D. Schmidt. Now in its ninth year, the festival celebrates the legacy of Robert Lawson, author of Rabbit Hill and illustrator of The Story of Ferdinand, Mr. Popper's Penguins and many other fine books. In addition to being a great influence on later authors and artists, Lawson is, to date, the only person to have won both the Newbery and the Caldecott awards. He lived in Westport for many years until his death in 1957, the year he received a Newbery honor award for his historical novel, The Great Wheel.
The festival opens on Thursday night with readings by each of the presenters from their own books. On Friday, the authors appear in local middle schools. A tour of the Weston Woods studios is available during the day on Friday for adults who are interested in a behind-the- scenes look at the production of picture-book films. Friday evening features an intimate dinner for the authors and festival participants at a local restaurant. The Saturday symposium for librarians, teachers, writers, illustrators, and other children's book enthusiasts starts at 9 AM, with each of the authors giving a 20-minute presentation about their work, followed by two small group sessions of about an hour each in the afternoon. The day concludes with an autographing session. Books will be sold throughout the festival.
Online registration begins August 24th. For further information see: http://www.westportlibrary.org/rabbithillfestival/
