[CCBC-Net] FLORIDA ?

I'm from Florida, and actually, I think the requirement is that all visiting authors be fingerprinted because they are classified as "vendors." It has to do with the Jessica Lunsford Act, passed after a little girl was murdered (nowhere near a school, by the way). Since this passed, all parent volunteers must be background checked and all vendors and "Level 2" volunteers (such as those who go on overnight trips) have to be fingerprinted. The fingerprinting was supposed to be in a statewide database, but I was fingerprinted for both Level 2 volunteer clearance and vendor clearance in my home county (Miami-Dade), and was told that it did not show up on a database in Port Charlotte last year.
If some authors are not being fingerprinted, as in your case, Lee, it may be because the schools are getting around it by paying for the visit with something other than a school check, such as PTSA funds, library fines, private monies, grants from the Rotary Club, etc. Since Florida schools often don't have money for author visits, this is usually the case. Only three schools I've visited in Florida have actually asked about the fingerprinting,
and they were all using FCAT monies or grants for low income schools.
While I totally support the idea of requiring people who are given unlimited access to the school -- such as a repairman or contractor who may be there for weeks -- being fingerprinted, it seems like overkill in the case of an author, who is never alone with the students (and seldom alone without) and is usually only there for a single day. It seems like it just presents another barrier to having author visits in our state. I got the fingerprinting because I am a Florida resident, but it will make it hard for out-of-state authors.

Depending on how long you are going to be on campus, what type of work you are doing, and what the expected contact with students will be depends on if you get a quick computerized scan of your driver's license or if you have to have a full sexual predator and background check. Even when I am going into a school district office where there are no children, I have to have driver's license check done. Vendors delivering items, filling soda machines, etc., have to have background checks done.

I live in Florida. I have been in classrooms both locally and throughout the state. I have been in college classrooms as well as elementary and high school.
I have NEVER been asked to be fingerprinted, etc.
Where did this come from?
