Picture this....an intro to the classics through contemporary lit as the method for teaching some of the themes of the genre, follow it up with the classics which teens will understand, and then make your bibliography of contemporary and classic literature of the genre available to your students. I guess I've always come at the idea of teaching genres from a writers' perspective and this would be a great way to teach about the evolution of writing while also allowing teens to discover for themselves that the classics are classics because the endure. Just a thought.
