[CCBC-Net] Favorite Characters

Kemie's post reminded me of characters who have always been so "alive" for me I didn't even think to mention them as characters here - Taran and Eilonwy and the entire cast of the Prydain Chronicles.

We read all five books aloud when my kids were young . . . and they devised a sort of memory-game around them. They would take turns announcing the characters' names, as if they were entering a stage, and the first one who couldn't think of one that hadn't been mentioned yet lost the game. I can still hear them announcing in loud, clear voices: Eilonwy-of-the-red-gold-hair, Taran-of-Caer-Dallben, Gwydion- Son-of-Don, Doli-of-the-Fair-Folk, and on and on. The tongue-twisting Welsh names were never a deterrent for them, or any kids over my years as a librarian who have loved them as much as we did.
