Although she's been mentioned, I have to say it again: Jacky Faber from the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyers. (And I too, highly recommend the audio books!) She is a screamingly fun swashbuckling tall-tale hero, uniquely reminiscent of Pippi Longstocking, Indiana Jones, and various plucky orphans of literature. Other memorable characters not mentioned already who stand out for me are: Joe Bunch from James Howe's TOTALLY JOE. Ruby Lu from Lenore Look's RUBY LU, BRAVE AND TRUE. Miri from PRINCESS ACADEMY And we all have our favorite Harry Potter characters. Professor Minerva McGonogall and Neville Longbottom are mine. Quiet and strong. Of course they don't drive the whole plot, but they help to make it so rich.
