Some of my favs:
1. Howl Jenkins from Diana Wynne Jones' Howl's Moving Castle. Snarky, clever, overly gifted, and a fairly decent human being, despite all his attempts to be otherwise.
1a. Sophie Hatter, also from HMC, mostly for putting up with Howl, but also because she is smart, competent, and not afraid to clean the bathroom.
2. Chrestomanci (Christopher Chant) from Diana Wynne Jones' Charmed Life. For this exchange, mostly:
"What makes you think I?m important?" Chrestomanci asked, still bewildered.
Cat was beginning to want to shake him. "You must be. You?re wearing important clothes. And Mrs. Sharp said you were. She said Mr. Norstrum would give his eyes just for your three letters."
"Has Mr. Norstrum given his eyes for my letters?" asked Chrestomanci. "It hardly seems worth it."
"No. He just gave Gwendolen lessons for them," said Cat.
"What? For his eyes? How uncomfortable!" said Chrestomanci. (p22)
3. Kinomoto Sakura from CLAMP's Cardcaptor Sakura manga series. Smart, feisty, independent, and not always relying on the men in her life to save her. My kinda gal.
