Hi everyone -- Yes, this is a wonderful topic!
A particular childhood favorite of mine is Lucinda, heroine of Ruth Sawyer's Newbery Medal-winning "Roller Skates."
Other childbook favorites are: Lois Lowry's Anastasia Krupnik; Vicky Austin, star of my favorite Madeleine L'Engle series (the Austin Family chronicles); Betsy of the Carolyn Haywood books; Ramona Quimby; and Mary Lennox of "The Secret Garden."
And I agree with "Big Grandma" that Harriet M. Welsh deserves a special mention. She was pivotal in my two career choices: first, 30 years as a newspaper reporter, and now an incredibly fulfilling second career as a children's librarian.
Some of my current favorites are: Enola Holmes, heroine of Nancy Springer's wonderful Sherlock Holmes-que series (if you are a Holmes fan don't miss this series!!!); Catherine Murdock's heroines -- D.J. Schwenk (of "Dairy Queen" fame) and Princess Ben; Jacky Faber of the "Bloody Jack" series
(listen -- please -- to the audiobooks -- they are fabulous!): Hermoine Granger; and Frankie Landau-Banks (E. Lockhart's "The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks").
Yes, these are all female characters. But I have some male favorites, too, led by Harry Potter. I also love Arnold Spirit, aka Junior, of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." Also, don't forget Kenny Watson of "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" and Christopher Paul Curtis's less well-known protagonist, Luther T. Farrell of "Bucking the Sarge." And what about Henry Reed, the hero of some great books by Keith Robertson
(illustrated by Robert McCloskey), as well as McCloskey's own Homer Price? Also, Henry Huggins and perhaps my favorite Beverly Cleary character, Otis Spofford.
Just a sampling of the many great characters who have graced, and continue to grace, my life.
Cheers, Karen MacPherson children's book reviewer, Scripps Howard News Service children's/teen librarian, Takoma Park Maryland Library
