In addition to those named already, how about:
Jesse from Bridge to Terabithia Tabitha Ruth Wexler (known as Turtle) from The Westing Game. Comfort Snowberger from Each Little Bird That Sings
And, I like all the characters in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. Carmen, Lena, Bee and Tibby are very well drawn.
