I loved Arriety as a child, too. Dicey from Homecoming and Dicey's Song. Lyra, of course, and then there's Will. Sue Stauffacher's Harry Sue. And even more recently, Kristin Cashore's Katsa from Graceling. And I know it's a short story and not a novel, but Eleanor Farjeon's indomitable Elsie Piddock from Elsie Piddock Skips in her Sleep may top them all.
