My most memorable character from about age 10 was Arrietty Clock, the adventuring daughter of Pod and Homily in The Borrowers. I loved that girl and believed in those little people fiercely.
More recently, I second Monica's vote for Lyra, and another character who lives on for me is Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief. She's a truly three-dimensional character, as is her foster father Hans and her sweet friend Rudy.
