One that stands out for me from my childhood is Sam Gribley in My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. I think I was 10 when I read it and found him a fascinating, strong character. I wanted to meet someone like him.
Others were Jo March in Little Women, Cherry Ames (a guilty pleasure at the time), Claudia, the main character in From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler...
Will have to think about which of the more contemporary characters have grabbed me. (Maybe I should focus on runaways -- 2 of out of my 4 above ran away from home!)
