Fourteen year old Sym, short for Symone, from Geraldine McCaughrean's The White Darkness continues to be a presence in the literary corner of my mind.
Her struggle to reconcile harsh and dangerous realities with her imaginative inner world pulled me like no other book has in a long time. While the external plot of the story has its own intensity, Sym's internal world was just as involved--especially her obsession with arctic explorer Titus Oates. Sym is a character who brings survival tactics, and mindset, to a whole different level.
