Two great books that I have recently read deal with teens and disabilities. The portrayal of the disability adds depth to the characters without becoming the main plot focus, and both books serve up rich, memorable teens. They are:
Sam, a recent high school graduate with Tourette's syndrome, from Jerk, California, by Jonathan Friesen. (Speak, 2008) Winner of the Schneider Family Book Award for teens.
Marcelo, a 17 year with Asperger's syndrome, from Marcelo in the Real World, by Francisco X. Stork. (Arthur A. Levine Books, 2009)

I'ts time to start our discussion for the second part of June:
*
* Character-Driven: Favorite Characters in Children's and Young Adult Literature.
You know who they are. The characters that stand out because of, or sometimes in spite of, the story of which they are a part. Characters that live on in your imagination long after the story ends. Do you have old friends from childhood whom you met in the pages of a book? Who are the welcome new acquaintances in your life?
