One series that just popped into my mind is The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. Along with several other themes, environmentalism has a large impact on the society. The futuristic towns, while not quite living in harmony with nature, claim a smaller area of land and leave nature alone everywhere else. There are strict rules on altering the natural world outside the cities, as that is one of the things that led to a previous downfall of civilization.
