One of my favorite non-fiction series is the Scientists in the Field series. Of these, particularly Sneed B. Collard's Monteverde: Science and Scientist in a Costa Rican Cloud Forest, April Pulley Sayre's Secrets of Sound: Studying the Calls and Sounds of Whales, Elephants, and Birds, Pamela Turner's Gorilla Doctors: Saving Endangered Great Apes, and Sy Montgomery's Quest for the Tree Kangaroo: An Expedition to the Cloud Forest of New Guinea. These books all have a very particular sense of place and give an understanding of science and scientists and the fascinating and meaningful work they do. I think they could inspire readers to want to do something -- to act, as well as give a sense of ecology.

I also love poetry for arousing/instilling/inspiring/reflecting on the joy of nature, especially Kristine O'Connell George's /Old Elm Speaks/, among others, and the works of Marilyn Singer, like /How to Cross a Pond: Poems about Water /and Footprints on the Roof: Poems about Earth.

Recent picture books like Diana Ashton's An Egg is Quiet and A Seed is Sleepy encourage children to wonder and think about nature (and perhaps question assumptions and make them want to learn more), and are simply stunning works of art as well.

And yes to Jim Arnosky -- especially Drawing from Nature (1987), the Crinkleroot books about observing nature and animal tracking, and Field Trips: Bug Hunting, Animal Tracking, Bird Watching, Shore Walking
(2002). The latter is enjoyable reading as well as telling the reader how to create an animal journal, what to write and observe in order to identify animals, really, how to observe nature.

And thanks for mentioning Anne of Green Gables. I insisted on PEI for my honeymoon, because I knew, as Anne said, it was the most beautiful place on earth. And it really is one of them.
