In addition to the Green Earth Book Award, you might want to also check out the annual children's book award given by the John Burroughs Association http://research.amnh.org/burroughs/young_readers_list.html.
Jim Arnosky is one of my favorite nature writers for children. His books offer readers a thoughtful, realistic approach to appreciating nature. His written and illustrated mostly picture books, but a favorite of mine is a longer work called Nearer Nature (Lothrop, 1996) which is sadly now out of print. Steve Jenkins is another fabulous nature writer and illustrator. Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop (together and solo) also consistently produce stunning books.
For older readers, the best book about environmentalism I have read is The Race to Save the Lord God Bird (FSG, 2004) by Phillip Hoose. It is a brilliantly written, riveting story of the ivory-billed woodpecker's decline and disappearance from the United States. Hoose puts the bird's story at the center of a larger one preserving endangered species and habitats.
Another interesting book forthcoming this year from Dutton is Years of Dust by Albert Marrin. He tells the story of the Dust Bowl, but much of Marrin's focus is on the ecological roots of the disaster, much of which was result of people exploiting the environment. A fascinating perspective.
Some other favorite titles:
50 Ways to Save the Earth by Anne Jankeliowitch. Abrams, 2008 The Missing Manatee by Cynthia DeFelice. FSG, 2005 My Contract with Henry by Robin Vaupel. Holiday House, 2003. Recycle This Book: 100 Top Children's Book Authors Tell You How to Go Green. Ed. by Dan Gutman. Yearling, 2009. There's a Hair in My Dirt ! A Worm's Story by Gary Larson. Harper, 1998. Where Once There Was a Wood by Denise Fleming. Henry Holt, 1996.
Edward T. Sullivan, Rogue Librarian Author, The Ultimate Weapon: The Race to Develop the Atomic Bomb
