I'd like to thank CCBC for hosting one of the most interesting and informative discussions that I've read since subscribing to the CCBC-Net listserv. And I'd also like to thank Ms. Madden for taking so much of her time to respond to our posts, discuss her research methods, and share the interviews and links to additional information.

Reading "Up Close: Harper Lee" a few months ago inspired me to read other Harper Lee-related works, including the Charles J. Shields book referenced by Ed Sullivan earlier today and the novel "In Search of Mockingbird" by Loretta Ellsworth from whom Ms. Madden mentioned that she received materials about Monroeville before her first trip there. I was also intrigued by reading that Ms. Lee assisted Truman Capote with research for his book "In Cold Blood," a book that I haven't read but is now on my ever-expanding reading list. And reading Ms. Madden's post last week about Gee's Bend, Alabama has encouraged me to re-visit "Stitchin' and Pullin': A Gee's Bend Quilt" written by Patricia C. McKissack and illustrated by Cozbi A. Cabrera, and to see if there are any other children's books about Gee's Bend. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that first-time novelist Irene Latham has written an historical middle-grade novel entitled "Leaving Gee's Bend" to be published in January 2010 (for more info, visit http://www.irenelatham.com/id15.html).

With the wealth of information provided by Ms. Madden, I found myself wishing for a companion book to "Up Close: Harper Lee" in which she would present and explain her research methods, describe the editing process and discuss as she has in her posts some of the related information that didn't make the final draft of the biography. Such a book would be an excellent and enlightening resource for students and educators who don't subscribe to this listserv and for those who won't be able to see Ms. Madden at a school visit, bookstore signing or other community event.

I'm very impressed with the quality of writing in the Viking Up Close series books that I've read. One question I have relates to how each of the writers has been selected for the biographies he/she has written. This summer, I hope to meet Michael Cooper, the author of "Up Close: Theodore Roosevelt," and I look forward to hearing what he has to say. Ms. Madden, who first approached you about writing a biography of Harper Lee?
