[CCBC-Net] folktales

I wish to add my thoughts regarding McDermott's books. I agree that the stories are fun; the flow, sound and rhythm of words delightful, and the illustrations engaging. However I agree with Debbie, the themes are problematic at times, yes, similar to Little Black Sambo. This week-end I was looking at his new book, PIG-BOY, a Hawaiian trickster tale. I found it offensive, especially to anyone Hawaiian or overweight. The little pig gets into trouble as any "kid-pig" would. However the little pig is a dirty little pig and soon a fat little pig. I do think this is the implicit stereotyping that promotes prejudice rather than tolerance. Nancy Bo Flood
