The picture book encompasses so many kinds of story, from simple baby books to sophisticated tales for older readers.? A couple of my favorites and books I tried to share yearly with kids, who increasingly had never heard of them, when I worked with the lower grades were Hildegard Swift and Lynd Ward's The little gray lighthouse and the great gray bridge and Edward Ardizzone's Little Tim and the brave sea captain.? Both are long, action-packed, suspenseful, and fascinating to boys, but they have to be pretty good listeners.? Most of my other standbys have already been mentioned.
The standard folktales, carefully chosen, in classic editions by Paul Galdone, James Marshall, and others should not be forgotten either, and need to be read before enjoying The stinky cheese man and such.? Too many kids these days only know classic folklore from television
in bowdlerized versions.
