[CCBC-Net] Favorite picture book makers

Hello,

Most of my favorites have been mentioned, but I'd like to add my voice to those who loved sharing Bill Peet stories with children. My adult sons still mention his books. One son memorized most of several Peet books when he was four or five years old. FAREWELL TO SHADY GLADE and THE WUMP WORLD both have strong environmental themes and left a lasting impression on my own children. His picture books are long (by today's standards), but they are told in an engaging manner with drawings that depict appealing characters (people and animals) and memorable settings. Bill Peet was incredibly prolific, so children who get hooked on his books will not run out of reading material for a long time.

I sometimes wonder if Bill Peet is overlooked to some extent by the experts in the world of children's literature because of his connection with Disney and his cartoon style illustrations. Looking through a number of textbooks on children's literature, I found only a few references to Peet's work. Of those few, all but one was his autobiography, which won a Caldecott honor. So, if you are looking for stories to read aloud to children that will capture their imagination and attention, try a Peet book.
