I am fond of so many picture books and picture book makers, that I had decided I wouldn't participate in this thread... how to narrow down... until Elsa mentioned Bill Peet. His GNATS OF KNOTTY PINE was a favorite of my grade school aged children and now as a MS librarian I recommend his Autobiography to students and they love the story and all of the illustrations. I vote for Bill Peet (CHESTER THE WORLDLY PIG, BUFORD THE LITTLE BIGHORN, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, RANDY'S DANDY LIONS, and many more). Not for the littlest children, but my kids and I loved them for the wit, surprising plot twists, funny and expressive illustrations, and much more.
