I'm a big fan of:
Judith Viorst (The Tenth Good Thing About Barney; Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day; I'll Fix Anthony.)
Mem Fox (Koala Lou, Possum Magic and Wombat Divine)
Kevin Henkes (especially Owen and Chrysanthemum)
And one other writer I like whom I haven't seen mentioned is Pat Brisson. Wanda's Roses is a lovely, lovely picture book and so is Melissa Parkington's Beautiful, Beautiful Hair.
