Pea soup, anyone?
How about a big fat worm?
Over a decade of doing early childhood ed., I probably spent the equivalent of three or four entire days leading quartets of preschoolers in acting out THE BIG FAT WORM by Nancy Van Laan and illustrated by Marisabina Russo. It was a great exercise for getting them to use their words and speak up. I keep hoping that if I mention the book every couple of years that it will eventually come back into print.
John Burningham's THE RABBIT was another all-time act-it-out favorite. And there wasn't a single kid who came through my preschool who couldn't tell you (enthusiastically and loudly) what the Lion in the Night hollered when he arrived back at the castle first.
Here are a some of the people who still get me smiling on a cloudy day:
Pamela Allen: A LION IN THE NIGHT (o.p.) FANCY THAT! (o.p.) BELINDA (o.p.)
Quentin Blake: COCKATOOS (o.p.) ALL JOIN IN (o.p.) CLOWN
John Burningham: THE RABBIT (o.p.) MR. GUMPY'S OUTING GRANPA
Barbara Helen Berger:
A LOT OF OTTERS GRANDFATHER TWILIGHT WHEN THE SUN ROSE
Barbara Cooney: ROXABOXEN (by Alice McLerrran) MISS RUMPHIUS ISLAND BOY
Molly Bang: COMMON GROUND THE PAPER CRANE TEN NINE EIGHT
Uri Shulevitz: DAWN (o.p.) SNOW RAIN RAIN RIVERS
Tomie de Paola: STREGA NONA THE KNIGHT AND THE DRAGON TATTIE'S RIVER JOURNEY (by Shirley Rousseau Murphy) (o.p.)
Eric Carle: THE VERY BUSY SPIDER THE GROUCHY LADYBUG THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR
David McPhail: MOLE MUSIC THE PUDDLE (o.p.) EDWARD AND THE PIRATES
James Marshall: GEORGE AND MARTHA: THE COMPLETE STORIES OF TWO BEST FRIENDS
