I enjoyed reading Heart of a Shepherd by Roseanne Parry. I believe this is her first novel. ... I have chosen this title for my Mock Newbery 2010 and students will read it beginning next fall. I agree with Beth about Heart of a Shepherd. And I'd like to recommend another first novel by newcomer Kathryn Fitzmaurice, The Year The Swallows Came Early. It's one we are doing this month in our Mock Newbery (adult readers) book group. What a delight to start the year's reading with a fresh voice that we enjoyed so thoroughly.
Eleven-year-old Eleanor "Groovy" Robinson keeps an illustrated cooking journal to save recipes and menus that she creates for family and friends until
she gets old enough to go to cooking school. This year the swallows are unexpectedly early to San Juan Capistrano where Groovy lives and everything else in her life seems to challenge her expectations, too. It is a delicious and enjoyable read to follow her through Chocolate-dipped Strawberries for her Dad who unexpectedly ends up in jail; Grilled Cheese Sandwiches on White for her best friend, Frankie, as he struggles with his anger over his Mom's leaving that feels like abandonment to him; Scrambled Eggs for Mama whose belief in horoscopes and the value of hair products is unshakable. Fitzmaurice evokes the smells and images and sounds of the sea-side subtly but with a deft hand. And Groovy's portrait is so nicely drawn as she struggles to weather the confusion of life's transitions. This is a wonderful first book that explores the meaning of family and forgiveness and connections.
