I'm on the email list for Teachers College Record. In today's email is notice of the free article in the current issue. It has bearing on our conversation earlier this month about words.
If it isn't too far off topic, I'd like to hear what others think of the article.
The article is here: http://www.tcrecord.org/Content.asp?ContentID=12870. It is called "Offensive Speech in Educational Materials: Changing Words Without Censorship." Its author, Sarah M. McGough, begins with a summary of Diane Ravitch's arguments in THE LANGUAGE POLICE. McGough then talks about Judith Butler's discussion of illocutionary and perlocutionary speech. As I read the article, I'm saying aloud "hmmm" again and again.
