The discussion on the Odyssey Award and audiobooks in general has terrific this month. Please feel free to continue this discussion for a few more days; however, at this time I'd also like to launch our discussion scheduled for the last two weeks of April.

We welcome your comments about promising newcomers to the field of children's and young adult literature. There are two awards within ALA that recognize new talent: the John Steptoe Award that's part of the Coretta Scott King Award and the brand-new William C. Morris Debut Award from YALSA which goes to an author for his or her first young adult novel. More info about these two awards is available here:

John Steptoe New Talent Award: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/rts/emiert/cskbookawards/johnsteptoe.cfm William C. Morris Debut Award: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/yalsa/booklistsawards/morris/morrisaward.cfm

The John Steptoe Award has been around since 1995 and looking over the list of past winners, it's interesting to see how many of them have become well established since receiving the award. The William C. Morris Award is unusual within ALA because the committee actually puts out a shortlist of five books in advance that they will then choose from. I especially appreciate this approach in this case because it gives greater visibility to five new authors instead of just one.

If there's anyone among us on CCBC-Net who served on the Morris Committee, we'd love to hear more about the process and what it was like from your perspective.

Please feel free to discuss any of the titles cited by the John Steptoe Award or the William C. Morris Award, or any other new authors or illustrators showing promise.
