My feeling is that it's definitely a matter of personal preference... and which one you discovered first. I was already in love with Jim Dale's version when I tried Stephen Fry's version after hearing all the raves. The Stephen Fry one just doesn't work for me at all, although I know that lots of people love it. My personal opinion is there isn't enough variation between characters.
I think it would be hard to agree which one is "the best," because each of us reacts to the narration differently. Also, keep in mind that there's a third version in English, done for Books for Blind.
It would have been very interesting if the Stephen Fry and the Jim Dale versions of Deathly Hallows had both been eligible for the 2008 Odyssey.
