On July 10, 2009 in Chicago, join us for the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) Preconference: ?Meeting the Challenge: Practical Tips and Inspiring Tales on Intellectual Freedom."

This day-long event will include:

* Author Judy Blume concluding a day designed to offer strategies for addressing complaints and stories to strengthen resolve.

* Opening session presenters Carolyn Caywood and Carrie Gardner speaking on the values of intellectual freedom in public and school libraries.

* Luncheon speaker James LaRue presenting on the opportunity a challenge represents.

* Freedom to Read Foundation board member John Horany highlighting some of the essential legal issues and his own work as an attorney.

* Breakout session options focusing on role-playing to minimize stress; responding to a challenge and dealing with the media; coming to terms with challenging books (fear and self-censorship); and empowering and educating kids and teens.

The rates for the preconference ($190 ALSC members; $240 ALA members;
$285 non-ALA members; $180 students) are well worth the tips and inspiration you'll walk away with! (Note: these prices will increase once Advance Conference Registration closes on May 22.)

Please join us for this day of pragmatic advice and passionate perspectives on intellectual freedom in library service to children.
