I'm sorry to say I haven't had a chance to read We are the Ship yet, although I did buy it, but a young friend from church is reading it first. But I did get to read my copy of Becoming Billie Holiday and I can't praise it enough. It is honest, accessible, and heartfelt. What a great choice to have available when students are assigned "a biography" to report on. It was a stroke of genius to give the various poems the same title as songs Billie recorded! Floyd Cooper's illustrations are beautiful and evocative. And I am especially impressed by the choice of subjects--Billie Holiday like Coca Chanel ( see "Different Like Coco") is an untraditional strong female whose story can inspire young readers who feel themselves "outside the main stream."
