Indeed there is a LOT of excitement surrounding this 40th anniversary and the winners this year really convey the growing strength of the award over time.
As I shared with my History of Children's Literature class the visual concept of the black child, e.g The Nicodemus Series, Pinky Marie, etc, my mind moved forward to Floyd Cooper's illustrations in Joyce Carol Thomas's The Blacker the Berry The colors range from the deepest of dark coffee so "thick and black a spoon could stand in it...to the little red headed, freckle-faced youngster who knows who she is because, "deep down where no one else can see, I bleed the 'one drop of blood that make Black me'..." Illustrations that speak with visual clarity
With the same artistic skill, Cooper captures the wide range of emotions that are so much a part of the beauty, yet tragedy that is the life of Billie Holiday.
New Talent winner Shadra Strtickland's illustrations in The Bird extend a narrative that at moments is plaintive, then painful and yet in its conclusion, peaceful. She has stepped into the palette of the youthful artist protagonist and captured his story for all to see.
The judges' job is thankfully getting more and more difficult each year!
