[CCBC-Net] 2009 Coretta Scott King Award

2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the Coretta Scott King Awards. For the next several days, we'll discuss the winners and honor books for the Coretta Scott King Award. There Are:

For Writing -- Winner: "We Are the Ship" by Kadir Nelson (Hyperion) Honor Books: "Keeping the Night Watch" by Hope Anita Smith (Henry Holt);
"The Blacker the Berry" by Joyce Carol Thomas (Joanna Cotler/HarperCollins); and "Becoming Billie Holiday" by Carole Boston Weatherford (Wordshong/Boyds Mills).

For Illustration: -- Winner: "The Blacker the Berry," illustrated by Floyd Cooper (Joanna Cotler/HarperCollins) Honor Books: "We Are the Ship" illustrated by Kadir Nelson (Hyperion);
"The Moon Over Star" illustrated by Jerry Pinkney (Dial); "Before John Was a Jazz Giant" illustrated by Sean Qualls (Henry Holt)

John Steptoe New Talent Award: Shadra Strickland, illustrator of
"Bird" (Lee & Low)
