I, too, found the voice in Frankie distracting--mostly because the narrator so clearly held Frankie in high regard, and giddily presented her as remarkable and precocious. That makes me uncomfortable. I much prefer to draw my own conclusions about a protagonist, rather than be told how I'm supposed to be feeling about her so I can come along for the ride and be as delighted as the narrator is--it's as though I'm being spoon fed the emotional reaction I'm supposed to have. I don't have this response to all strong narrative voices and tend to like wry humor, but for some reason here it felt different. Cloying, maybe.
