I don't remember if I said this in an earlier discussion, but what impressed me most about The Surrender Tree is the control Engle has over the piece. Each speaker's voice is just distinctive enough, but not so distinct that the narrative voice of the poem as a whole is lost. How lucky we are to have Margarita Engle to tell us the story of Cuba and her people.

It is now time to turn out attention to the books that won Pura Belpre Awards and Honors. The Belpre Award, co-sponsored by ALSC and REFORMA, recognizes outstanding books by Latino/a authors and illustrators. You can find out more about at: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/belpremeda l/belpreabout/index.cfm
This year's winners are:
Author: Margarita Engle for "The Surrender Tree:Poems of Cuba's Struggle
for Freedom" (Henry Holt)
Illustrator: Yuyi Morales for "Just in Case" (Neal Porter/Roaring Brook)
The 2009 Belpre Honor Books are:
Author Honors: Lucia Gonzales for "The Storyteller's Candle / La velita de los cuentos"
(Children's Book Press) Francisco Jimenez for "Reaching Out" (Houghton Mifflin) Yuyi Morales for "Just in Case" (Neal Porter/Roaring Brook)
Illustrator Honors: Amy Cordova for "What Can You Do with a Rebozo?" written by Carmen Tafolla (Tricycle Press) Lulu Delacre for "The Storyteller's Candle / La velita de los cuentos" written by Lucia Gonzalez (Children's Book Press) Rudy Gutierrez for "Papa and Me" written by Arthur Dorros
(Rayo/HarperCollins)
A couple of things are worth noting right off the bast. This year for the first time, there was a Belpre winner ("The Surrender Tree") that was also honored by the Newbery Committee. There were also two Belpre-winning picture books ("Just in Case" and "The Storyteller's Candle" that were recognized both for writing and illustration.
Please share your experiences and thoughts about the 2009 Belpre winners.
