Early bird registration rates for the ALA annual conference in Chicago end on March 6, so register now: http://www.ala.org/ala/conferencesevents/upcoming/annual/2009/ registration.cfm
And when you register, remember to sign up to attend the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) Preconference: ?Meeting the Challenge: Practical Tips and Inspiring Tales on Intellectual Freedom,? which will be held on July 10, 2009.
There aren?t early bird rates on preconference registration ($190 ALSC members; $240 ALA members; $285 non-ALA members; $180 students), but there ARE plenty of great reasons to attend this day-long event that will shine the spotlight on intellectual freedom. (Note: these prices will increase once Advance Conference Registration closes on May 22.)
*** Author Judy Blume is one of those reasons?she will conclude a day designed to offer strategies for addressing complaints and stories to strengthen resolve.
*** Other preconference speakers include opening session presenters Carolyn Caywood and Carrie Gardner on the values of intellectual freedom in public and school libraries; luncheon speaker James LaRue on the opportunity a challenge represents; and Freedom to Read Foundation board member John Horany on some of the essential legal issues and his own work as an attorney.
*** Breakout session options will focus on role-playing to minimize stress; responding to a challenge and dealing with the media; coming to terms with challenging books (fear and self-censorship); and empowering and educating kids and teens.
Join us for this day of pragmatic advice and passionate perspectives on intellectual freedom in library service to children.
