I'd like to thank everyone who participated in our lively discussion of the Batchelder Award this year. Your enthusiasm is contagious, and I trust that interest in this award, and in international books for children, will continue to grow. If you have any last minute comments about the Batchelder Award, please feel free to make them today.
In the meantime, I will now turn out collective attention toward one of the newest awards, the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for the most distinguished book for beginning readers. Youc an find more infomration about the Geisel Award here: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/geiselaward/index.cfm
The winner of the 2009 Award is:
"Are You Ready to Play Outside?" written and illustrated by Mo Willems
(Hyperion)
Honor Books:
"Chicken Said 'Cluck!'" by Judyann Ackerman Grant; illustrated by Sue Truesdell (HarperCollins)
"One Boy" written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger (Neal Porter/Roaring Brook)
"Stinky" written and illustrated by Eleanor Davis (Raw Junior/TOON Books)
"Wolfsnail: A Backyard Predator" by Sarah C. Campbell; photographs by Sarah C. Campbell and Richard Campbell (Boyds Mills)
This year's selections provide a good demonstration of the types of books that can be recognized as excellent for beginning readers, from the traditional "I Can Read" format to picture books to comic book style to easy nonfiction. Please share your thoughts on these books and on the Geisel Award in general. Now that the award has been around a few years, do you find it helpful in selecting books to suggest to beginning readers?
