A few people have told me that they didn't receive the attachment (thank you, Cynthia and Alison!), so I'm pasting it in below.

  Mock Batchelder Guidelines -- draft

Purpose, Terms, and Criteria (what you look for in a Batchelder book, and why): http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/batchelderawar d/batchelderterms/index.cfm

Types of Group: reading group, book club, class/school (middle school is perfect), teachers, parents

Venue: schools, libraries, community groups, after-school programs

Books to Consider: It can be hard to identify and locate books that are eligible for the award. We therefore propose two models:

a. Best of the Decade: Choose books from the last ten years of Batchelder winner and honor books so you don't have to worry about finding eligible books. The complete list (1968 to the present) is on the Batchelder site: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/batchelderawar d/batchelderpast/index.cfm. You may wish to focus on books available in paperback or already in your collection; or perhaps you have Friends' or other money available to stock up on extra copies so everyone can read your shortlist.

b. Current Books: This is for the brave of heart who are curious about books currently eligible for the award and willing to hunt for them. The Batchelder Committee is constrained by the fact that every eligible book is considered a shortlist book, and we are not allowed to publish the shortlist. Therefore we can't provide a list of books as we receive them. But if you want to develop your own current shortlist, there are a number of things you can do. For example, look at new books from authors and publishers that have won the award previously. Look at World Literature Today and Bookbird for notices and reviews. Perhaps you see new translations in your line of work, or know someone who does.

Process: Nominate books for consideration and justify your choice. Discuss those books individually. First raise the positive aspects of the book, and then the negative. After all the shortlist books have been considered, everyone notes their first, second, and third place choices on a ballot. Each first place vote gets 4 points, each second place vote gets 3 points, and each third place vote gets 2 points. In order to win, a book has to get at least 12 points, and it must have a 3-point lead over the book that places second. If this does not happen on the first ballot, there is a second ballot, etc. Then, if you wish to have honor books, you can choose the runners-up to the winner, or go to another ballot. Usually a few books will clearly rise to the top in this way.
Timeline: You can hold a mock Batchelder anytime, but we suggest doing it in the fall, announcing your winner and honor books in December, and then watching the ALA press conference in January to hear about the official winners.

Before we leave our Batchelder discussion, I wanted to raise the question of how to better promote this wonderful award. I am the current chair, and my committee is going to try very hard this year to raise the profile of the Batchelder. Since holding mock awards is common for the Newbery and Caldecott and some of the other bigger awards, and we have not heard of anyone holding a mock Batchelder, that is what we would like to encourage. What do you think of this idea? Is it something you might do yourself, or encourage others to try? Do you have other suggestions?

I am attaching the very rough one-page set of guidelines we have developed so far. They are meant to be as flexible and simple as possible. I would appreciate any comments about the guidelines off-list.

Thanks very much!

Best, Annette
