We now would like to shift gears for the next week and discuss this year's Batchelder Award for outstanding translated book. This award does not go to an author or translator, but rather to the publisher of the book, as its intent is to encourage publishers to seek out children's books originally published outside the U.S. in languages other than English, and to publish English-language translations of those books. More information about the Batchelder Award can be found here: http://staging.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/batchelderaward/batchelderaward.cfm

The 2009 winner is: Arthur A. Levine Books/Scholastic for ?Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit? by Nahoko Uehashi. Translated from Japanese by Cathy Hirano. Illustrated by Yuko Shimizu.

And the * *Honor Books are: 1) Eerdmans for ?Garmann?s Summer? by Stian Hole. Translated from Norwegian by Don Bartlett. 2) Amulet/Harry N. Abrams for ?Tiger Moon? by Antonia Michaelis. Translated from the German by Anthea Bell.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on these books, as well as on the Batchelder Award and translated books in general.
