From Wednesday, February 18^th through Tuesday, February 24^th , we?ll be discussing the 2009 Batchelder Award winner and honor books on CCBC-Net.

The Mildred L. Batchelder Award for outstanding translated books is a citation awarded to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States. As stated on their website, ALSC gives the award to encourage American publishers to seek out superior children's books abroad and to promote communication among the peoples of the world.

The 2009 Award Winner:

Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic Inc. for Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, written by Nahoko Uehashi, translated from the Japanese by Cathy Hirano

The 2009 Honors:

Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. for Garmann?s Summer, written and illustrated by Stian Hole, translated from the Norwegian by Don Bartlett.

Amulet Books, an imprint of Harry N. Abrams, Inc. for Tiger Moon, written by Antonia Michaelis, translated from the German by Anthea Bell.

What are your responses to these winners? Sometimes translated works get less attention than domestic titles?did you have an opportunity to read any of the books before they were award-winners?

I was delighted when I first read /Garmann?s Summer/ earlier this year. The solemn tone and whimsical collages initially caught my attention as well as its setting in Norway, a place I visit often. As an adult reader, it took me a few readings of this title before I understood why I appreciated it. There are striking contrasts between dark and light, serious and silly, and real and imaginary. I haven?t had the opportunity to share it yet with children, but I think that Garmann?s fears are somewhat universal.
