I was over the top with pleasure that The Graveyard Book received the medal. I fell in love with it last summer and then read it aloud to my 4th graders last fall and they fell equally in love with it. We ended up doing a mural of which this blog post tells all: http://medinger.wordpress.com/2008/11/14/in-the-classroom-the-graveyard-book/ And then if you want to know even more about what I think please check out my review in this weekend's New York Times Book Review at: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/books/review/Edinger-t.html.
The Underneath was another favorite of mine. I've written about it as well on my blog, but will say that what captivated me was the poetic style and the remarkable atmosphere the author created. I'm now reading it aloud to my class and they are completely captivated.I'm thinking that it too needs a mural as, like The Graveyard Book, there is an incredibly vibrant sense of place. That seemingly primordial forest with the sentient trees, the bayou, the creek --- I can see it already!
