[CCBC-Net] We Are the Ship

Lest we forget that the criteria for the Caldecott does not indicate that the award book should be a picture book, the award is given for the "best illustrated book for children" and has a text worthy of the illustrations. So really in terms of the Caldecott, the question of picture book or illustrated book (WE ARE THE SHIP) is a moot point. But isn't it incredible that Kadir Nelson has garnered four Caldecott honors in the past five years. "Always a bridesmaid never a bride; perhaps he will become a bride with his next book. He has three on tap for 2009 -- eligible the for the 2010 award (if they are are all published on time) -- see note below.

2009 -- We are the ship : the story of Negro League baseball / words and paintings by Kadir Nelson ; forward by Hank Aaron. (2008)

2008 -- Henry's freedom box / by Ellen Levine ; illustrated by Kadir Nelson. (2007)

2007 -- Moses : when Harriet Tubman led her people to freedom / Carole Boston Weatherford ; illustrated by Kadir Nelson. (2006)

2005 -- Ellington was not a street / written by Ntozake Shange ; illustrations by Kadir Nelson. (2004)

FORTHCOMING IN 2009 Testing the ice : a true story about Jackie Robinson / by Sharon Robinson ; illustrated by Kadir Nelson. (Scholastic, 2009) Coretta Scott / poetry by Ntozake Shange ; paintings by Kadir Nelson. (Katherine Tegan books, 2009)NOTE: the author is also the author of Nelson's winning 2005 winning title All God's critters / lyrics by Bill Staines ; pictures by Kadir Nelson. (Simon & Schuster, 2009)

What have I missed. Sharron

I'm on the digest version so forgive me for being a bit behind on the conversation, but I wanted to respond to Suzanne's point that We are the Ship is an illustrated book as opposed to a picture book.

It's all relative, though, isn't it? I would say that CRISS CROSS is an illustrated book or WHITTINGTON is an illustrated book, but WE ARE THE SHIP with illustrations in virtually every spread is in essence a visual experience. Now I also think it's a textual experience, but I don't think the two have to be mutually exclusive as the previous Caldecott winner suggests.

I'm not arguing whether WE ARE THE SHIP should have received Caldecott attention or not. I'm merely saying that the way that I read the criteria, the book was eligible.
