90 students read 20 books for our Mock Newbery Project. We voted yesterday and chose:

Newbery Winner: Seer of Shadows by Avi Honor Books: Trouble by Gary Schmidt
                        Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor

We will eat breakfast together and watch the live webcast on Monday, January 26th. We can't wait to see what the "real" committee chooses.

This is our second year doing a Mock Newbery and we tried a few things that worked out very well. First, we created a Moodle forum so that students could discuss the books electronically. That was extremely popular and generated more time for discussion than we ever would have had time for face to face. In addition we used Skype to compare predictions with a school in West Allis. We will Skype with them again next week to compare reactions. I have to say that the Mock Newbery project that we do has turned out to be very authentic and motivating to students. Our former students have been reading as well and emailing us their predictions. Very fun!
