On Monday, January 12th, Austin Public Library held its first Mock Newbery Discussion. We discussed ten titles - books that were pre-selected to provide us with a sample that could reflect (at least in part) the variety of books the Newbery committee might consider. We also hoped these titles would allow us to experience the typical issues the committee might face while discussing books that were intended for the wide variety of audiences within the 0-14 age range. Our Mock Newbery titles were:
Ain't Nothing But a Man: My Quest to Find the Real John Henry by Scott Reynolds Nelson
Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things by Lenore Look
Brooklyn Bridge by Karen Hesse
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Savvy by Ingrid Law
Smiles to Go by Jerry Spinelli
The Trouble Begins at 8: A Life of Mark Twain in the Wild, Wild West by Sid Fleischman
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt
Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor
We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball by Kadir Nelson
After one round of balloting, we did not have an official winner. Since the library customers of Austin were anxiously awaiting our return to public service, we decided to choose our top scorer as our winner: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. We awarded our second and third place scores with honors: Brooklyn Bridge by Karen Hesse and The Trouble Begins at 8 by Sid Fleischman.
Regards,
Alison
