At the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, we have developed a Mock Science Books & Films (SB&F) election. Built around the annual SB&F Prize <http://www.sbfonline.com/prizes> for Excellence in Science Books, our Mock SB&F election revolves around the SB&F Prize finalist books (SB&F homepage <http://www.sbfonline.com/> ). For more details on this election see the online version of our SB&F article
<http://www.uwlax.edu/murphylibrary/departments/curriculum/stem/mockSBFa rticle.pdf> which explains the process for pre-service teachers
(undergraduate students preparing to become K-8 teachers) and our Mock SB&F website
<http://www.uwlax.edu/murphylibrary/departments/curriculum/stem/mocksb&f
.html> with additional materials. For 2008, the elementary and middle grade finalist trade books
<http://www.sbfonline.com/SubaruAward/2008finalists.htm> were assessed by our pre-service teachers. Their favorites from the 2008 list were:
Elementary: Where in the Wild; Turtle Summer; and Vulture View.
Middle: Frog Heaven; Being Caribou; and Tracking Trash.
We are currently running the 2009 Mock SB&F election using this year's finalist <http://www.sbfonline.com/SubaruAward/2009finalists.htm> trade books with elementary (2nd grade) and middle (6th grade) level students. Students will vote for their favorites prior to the official SB&F award announcements in early January 2009. Pre-service teachers will again assess these books too after the spring semester begins.

During this month of talking about our favorite books of the year, if
you are involved in a mock Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, Sibert, Coretta
Scott King, Pura Belpre, or any other mock award discussion in your
community, with children, teens, or adults, we invite you to submit the
results of your discussion, along with a complete list of the books you
discussed. It's always interesting to see what is rising to the top
around the country.
